The Secret to Eliminating the Skills Gap

Do you feel that your business is a shopping cart with three wheels? A lot of people often feel this way. They feel like there’s just not a cohesive operation firing on all cylinders, that there’s something that needs to be fixed to really make things hum along smoothly. Too often, that comes in the form of a skills gap, where not everyone is up to the same challenges.

Here are some ways to fix that situation and deal with it practically, to build a better company over time.

Deliberate Hiring

Of course, one aspect of this can be done through hiring. It’s critically important that HR people and other people involved in hiring recognize that hiring has to be done in a consistent way, that there are concrete qualifications and skills that need to be present across the board. Without this kind of cohesive hiring practice, you’re going to get scattershot result and feel like your workplace isn’t as consistent as it should be.

Team Training

Too many companies tend to train people individually. They may feel like each job role is unique, or that time frames don’t accommodate team training. The companies that make the investment in getting groups of people together can benefit from a much better consistent work model. When everybody has the same information and training, they pull together from the same level, and deliver much more predictable results.

Assessment

Assessment of skills and qualifications can be written into periodic reviews in ways that show business leaders what to do. If the question isn’t about training, but about someone’s motivation and ability to internalize information, that’s something that often comes up during the review process. Then it’s up to HR people and business leaders to deal with it the right way.

Standardize Jobs

You may have heard of information silos, where critical business intelligence is hidden from the people who need to use it. In some senses, the same is true for job roles. Companies that have job roles that are isolated from each other are often going to experience ‘business turbulence.’ To solve this problem, integrate some of the roles and responsibilities of different job positions. Build some overlap into how various managers, engineers and department heads interact, and you’ll be able to draw on your teams a lot more, to fix an imbalance, or correct some kind of problems related to asymmetrical skills and qualifications.

Look At All Talent

Another good tip is to stay open to different sources of talent from inside and outside of the business. That includes temporary staffing assistance, where some contracted or temporary individuals may have what it takes to drive the business forward.
