5 Resume Tips to Land the Perfect Job

Your resume is the first impression you will have on a potential employer. You need to create a document that will draw them in and entice them to call you. Unfortunately, there is no one right way to write a killer resume so many job seekers have trouble deciding what to include. Here are 5 things you should know to create a professional, appropriate resume.

  • Include your contact information. It is surprising how difficult it can be to reach some candidates. When you’re updating your resume be sure to update your contact information as well. Include your current phone number and an active email address. Also, list your address. Some companies are looking for local candidates and want to see that you’re nearby.
  • List accomplishments, not duties. Resumes use to be a list of every day job functions but as the market became more competitive job seekers needed to step up their games. You can do this by listing your accomplishments for each job rather than just your duties. Include numbers and data as much as possible but don’t over exaggerate.
  • Include dates of employment. When job seekers have been out of work for a while they are hesitant to include dates of employment on their resume. However, companies are looking for this information and are likely to dismiss a resume without it. Include any temporary work or volunteer work you’ve done to fill in the employment gaps.
  • Know what to leave off. Unnecessary information may be the true downfall of any resume. Some job seekers will include their birth date or their marital status on the resume. Leave this information off. Making a hiring decision based on age or some other factors is illegal and rather than risk an incident many resume reviewers will disregard resumes with this kind of inappropriate information all together. Keep only information that is relevant to your job.
  • Use easy to read formatting. Finally, review your resume to make sure that the important information is easy to read at a glance. A recruiter or hiring manager will take about six seconds to review your resume initially. You want to make sure it is formatted in a way that attracts the eye. Don’t use fancy fonts or ink colors. Use bullets to separate information. Keep the lines clean and easy to read.
