It can become demotivating to work a short term assignment and feel treated differently than others doing the same job. What can you do as a manager to make temp workers feel appreciated on the job?

  1. Local gift cards. It only takes a small investment to acquire local restaurant gift cards. This can make a very big impression on your temporary staff. Even a small gesture like this can increase their performance. You can provide them as a reward for excellent work or develop a contest to drive the temps in the department toward a common goal.
  2. Bonuses. You staffing provider may be able to help provide a bonus program for superstar temp employees. For instance, you could offer a completion bonus for temps who stay through the duration of a several month project. Extra bonuses can also be provided for temps going above and beyond in the job. Your staffing agency can pay the bonus on the paycheck and bill you for the total amount.
  3. Time off. Permanent employees feel some sense of security with their availability of paid time off or sick days. For most temps it can be terrifying if an emergency arises because they will lose at least a day of pay if not their assignment for missing work.
