Networking Tips for the Shy Professional | Get Out There!

Not everyone is entirely comfortable with networking. Introverts often have a hard time trying to connect with others in their industry because they feel out of place or awkward at a networking event. But networking is important for a successful job search. How can you get out there and meet new people if the entire thought makes you want to hide inside?

3 Networking Tips for Shy Professionals

Offer Something.

One of the main stumbling blocks for shy people when it comes to talking to others about their job search is the feeling of being a burden. You may not believe that you are worthy of asking someone else for help. Instead, turn the tables. When you talk to people think about the ways in which you can be of service.

If you are afraid of showing up at an event without knowing anyone try volunteering. This will keep you occupied but you will also have a chance to talk with people who may ask you questions. This could be an easy way to strike up a casual conversation as well.

Be Early.

It is really intimidating to show to up to an event and see everyone already assembled in small groups discussing important topics. It is terrifying to think of inserting yourself into any of these conversations. Instead, show up early and start conversations with the other people who showed up early and feel as awkward as you do.

Be Realistic.

It is completely okay to feel overwhelmed after a short period of time at a networking event. Don’t try to push yourself beyond what you can handle. If you’ve gathered two or three business cards consider it a win and be sure to follow up with them via email within the next few days.
