OSHA Insights: General Requirement for Dipping and Coating Operations

When it comes to hazardous materials it is important for warehouse and industrial facilities to ensure that their employees are safe. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration offers guidelines and requirements for safety management on the job site. If your company performs dipping and coating operations here are the regulations to consider for your facility.

  • Container. The containers that are used as dip tanks must be strong enough to withhold the weight of all materials contained whether temporarily or permanently.
  • Ventilation. The ventilation for an area where a hazardous material is held must be kept within certain regulations as defined by OSHA. Worker’s exposure must also be controlled. A lid or covering may be used in place of ventilation in certain circumstances. Mechanical ventilation must also comply with requirements.
  • Combustibles. Any materials which may cause fire or explosion if exposed must be kept safe at all times.
  • Safety procedures. Employees are required to know first aid as prescribed by the OSHA standards. An emergency shower and eye-wash station close to the dipping or coating operation is also essential for hazardous materials. If this equipment isn’t feasible a water hose may be used following OSHA regulations.
  • Inspections. Inspections must be performed on the hoods and ductwork of the ventilation system specifically in regards to corrosion or damage. This must be done at least quarterly during regular operations and prior to any use after a prolonged shutdown. Airflow must always be adequate and inspected quarterly during operation as well. All dipping and coating equipment must be inspected periodically. This includes covers, drains, overflow piping, and electrical and fire-extinguishing systems. Problems must be corrected immediately.
