OSHA Insights: Compressed Gas Requirements

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration provides regulations for businesses and facilities to provide a safe work environment for their staff. If your company works with compressed gas it is important that the OSHA safety standards are followed to ensure that the workplace remains safe for all permanent and temporary employees.

Evaluating OSHA Compressed Gas Requirements

  • Inspection. All inspections of compressed gas canisters are overseen by the Hazardous Materials Regulations of the Department of Transportation. Employers must maintain that the canisters are safe based on a visual inspection to the best of their ability. If the compressed gas is does not fall under the DOT regulations then visual and other inspections must comply with the Compressed Gas Association handbook.

  • Safe Handling. The Compressed Gas Association pamphlets also dictate the safe handling of all canisters of compressed gas. This applies to how it is handled in the plant and in storage. It also applies to all compressed gases in cylinders, portable tanks, rail tank cars, or motor vehicle cargo tanks.

  • Relief Devices. Compressed gas cylinders and portable tanks need to have pressure relief devices installed. This is also true for cargo tanks. They must be maintained in accordance with Compressed Gas Association Pamphlets
