Why a Thorough Onboarding Process is Important for Temporary Workers

In some companies, there can be a disconnect when it comes to training for temporary employees.

Most businesses would never dream of skimping on onboarding for new hires. Every person who is successfully hired is subjected to endless rounds of safety training, videos and digital pop quizzes, and other rigmarole, not to mention job specific training like how to operate machinery and how to address clients.

But when temporary employees walk in the door, they might just be handed a pair of boots or gloves, or a pen and a note pad, and sent out into that business environment without much training at all.

Introducing Workers to a Company

Companies who successfully use temporary workers understand that although these individuals might not be around for years and years, they are still valuable parts of that enterprise community. So they put time and effort into making sure people know where they’re working, and that they understand the corporate culture.

They also make the temporary workers feel welcome, as if they’re part of the team of that brand. They tend to get more productivity out of their workers, partly because the temporary employees know what they’re supposed to be doing, and partly because of the loyalty that goes with taking time to do onboarding equally and welcome every person.

Safety Training

It also makes sense to pursue the same onboarding processes for temporary workers when it comes to workplace safety. Many of these employees will be doing the exact same work that full-timers do, so cutting corners on training is not a good idea. Even if the temporary workers aren’t going to be subject to worker’s compensation, that’s no reason to treat them differently or think that a workplace injury won’t have an impact on the company. It will. Regardless of whether someone is an employee or contractor, an injury always takes its toll, not just on the individual, but on the business as well.

Encouraging Skills

The best companies also try to get temporary workers with some knowledge of the industry, and they may give them upfront training, both to increase their productivity, and to make them more valuable assets in the future. There are a lot of temp-to-hire situation where companies figure out that those individuals who have come in as temporary workers are really the best source of long-term employees. That’s another reason that it doesn’t really pay to just have temporary employees coming in and out like cogs in a big wheel.
